John Goodman: “Read Everything.”

Monday morning, actor John Goodman was awarded an honorary doctorate from Missouri State University.  He took the time to reflect and offer appreciation for his time in Springfield at the school, as well as offer this bit of advice for its future graduates:

 “Read, read, read, read, read. Read everything. You can’t work unless you know the world, and outside of living in the world the best way to learn about the world is to read about it.”

F Scott Fitzgerald had recorded this list in 1936 for his friend and nurse, Dorothy Richardson, at the Grove Park Inn found in Asheville, North Carolina. The full selection he listed appeared to be available in the Modern Library and include notable reads such as The Maltese Falcon, by Dashielle Hammett, The Plays of Oscar Wilde, and War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy.
